Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital
Caregivers, Good Neighbors and Bedford VA Employee
Wendy and John Rocca provide care through Cheer. The Rocca family are not strangers to military service and, are committed to serving their country and those who serve. Wendy and John have three (3) children, all of whom have been deployed at one time or another. The inspiration to provide cheer to deployed troops came to them when their daughter Tracy was deployed. Wendy and John would send toiletries and other essentials to Tracy and learned that other troops were in need of these comforts and outreach from home. John and Wendy knew what needed to be done and created an organization called Operation American Soldier that provides cheer to our deployed troops by shipping “cheer boxes”. The cheer boxes might contain toiletries, gift cards or postage but what they mostly bring is a piece of home.
Operation American Soldier ships out over 35,000 pounds in comfort items each year to our deployed troops. This effort has taken over the Rocca home and their personal lives. When asked, Mrs. Rocca replied, “it is the very least we can do for them considering all they do for us”.
John Rocca is a Bedford VA Police Officer and because of his private endeavors and those of his family he relates to Veterans in a unique way. Staff at the hospital are inspired by his example and wanted to know how they could help. As a result of this, Operation American Soldier has been invited to participate in our All Employee Appreciation events raising truck loads of comfort items, postage and awareness for the need to support those who are serving our country.
John and Wendy just received the 2010 Good Neighbor Award, Dedicated, Passionate and Inspiring. Soldiers that are deployed may not be returning home for the holidays. Many of us at home will enjoy a warm home to share with family and a delightful meal. Consider what comfort you can provide to a soldier.
