Bedford VA Medical Center continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this update: the latest information on reporting community COVID testing and mental health awareness.

BEDFORD, Mass. -- Bedford VA Medical Center continues to focus on recovery operations and initiatives to resume visitation for our residents with updated precautions. 

We continue to see residents of our Community Living Centers “recover,” having been designated as "clinically resolved" from their previous COVID-19 positive diagnosis. Recovered patients are transferred to designated recovery care units within the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital here. 

Report COVID testing
Testing for COVID remains a critical part of the public health response to the pandemic. Knowing where the virus is and isn’t helps us to prevent and limit spread that affects our Veterans and employees, as well as the community at large. Please help us spread the word to Veterans that if they have received COVID testing provided by a non-VA entity, they should contact their VA healthcare provider so we can capture that information in their medical record. Your assistance will help us to perform important population-level surveillance and prevention. 

COVID-19 Statistics
COVID-19 positive data as of today is 56 inpatient Veterans (-6 from last report), 18 (-8) outpatient Veterans and 19 employees (77 have returned to work) currently positive. 

There have been 22 (+4) total deaths related to COVID-19 at Bedford VAMC plus 12 (+2) total COVID-related deaths of Bedford patients at other medical locations (i.e. West Roxbury, VA Boston, Lahey Hospital, including home-based primary care). Six outpatient Veterans not previously reported also died. In addition, we had an employee death related to COVID-19, our first. This brings the total number of deaths to 41. 

Mental Health Awareness
The Employee Assistance Program and our VA chaplains remain available to support Veteran residents and staff during this difficult time. We are working to create a “sacred space,” a permanent location on the grounds accessible to both staff and family members where they can visit and grieve for those they have lost during the pandemic. 

We encourage outpatient Veterans to communicate their concerns and needs – for work, mental and physical health, home life, etc. Remain hopeful, and if you're having a tough time, call the 24-hour Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255; press 1 for Veterans.
